Working from home: Internet reliability will be put to the test

Cases of self-isolation are rising, and more businesses are developing systems or implementing plans for employees to work from home. With daytime demand expected to rise significantly on the residential internet networks of WA and Perth, how are Internet providers going to perform?

To mitigate the risk and spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) companies, organisations and even schools are developing systems or implementing plans to keep people in their homes. 

There are major benefits to working from home and technology has given us the ability to do so however there are some concerns with the growing dependence on home internet connections as the numbers of individuals working from home climbs.

Here’s everything you need to know about your home internet connection, and how it might behave with the impending additional network demand. 

With face to face meetings on the decline, the increase in the use of video conferencing for meetings will drive the demand for additional bandwidth and network performance.

Why is my internet at home different to my internet at work?

In Western Australia, most workplaces have high-performance internet designed to handle the number of staff and type of work in that business premises. 

With the digital transformation of businesses into the cloud, the ability to work effectively and efficiently from home is a reality – if you have the right type of internet connection.

Your residential internet connection is most likely to be NBN Fibre to the Node, which means you have a copper connection into your house, and this immediately places limits on what can be achieved in terms of bandwidth and performance. If you are really unlucky you may still be on older ADSL technology. 

Now is the time to check your contract with your internet provider to find out your maximum speed, and peak speed (the speed when the network is at its most congested i.e. peak time). 

Australia is ranked No 64 in the world on the Speedtest Global Index for January 2020 with an average download speed of 42.2Mbps (compared to the No 1 – Singapore at 202Mbps).

Peak times and how these are likely to affect you.

Our peak times are the hours in the day when most households have most of their connections and devices using the internet. We typically see this increased internet activity from 4pm when the kids get home from school to about 10pm when Dad is snoring on the couch watching Netflix. Congestion crowds the network, which slows down the speed and ultimately affects your use of the internet.

We are very likely to see this peak period increase to include business hours as people work from home, resulting in an impact on average daytime speeds. 

For example, the average speed for a common 100/40 service on NBN is 84.9 Mbps, peak speeds could be as slow as 50mbps.

If you know you are going to be relying on your home internet, it may be worth temporarily investing in a faster plan and larger plan (if you’re not on an unlimited plan) to accommodate the increase of your home internet usage.

How to make sure you are getting the best speed at home.

Quite often issues arise because your router or modem cannot handle the throughput of your internet connection.
