What are the nbn® speeds in my area?

When you connect to the nbn®, you have a choice of speeds, from 25 megabits per second (Mbps) all the way up to Ultrafast 1000 Mbps. The right one for you will depend on how your home or business uses the internet.

Home Basic / Casual

The Home Basic plan, also called a 25 Mbps plan, gives a maximum download speeds of 25 Mbps and upload speeds of 5 Mbps, with a typical evening speed of 22 Mbps. While it’s not the lowest speed tier available (some providers still offer a 12 Mbps plan), we find generally it’s the best entry-level plan..

This tier is suitable for two-person households with average internet use, even when using the internet at the same time. You’ll find it adequate for sending emails, making phone calls, browsing the web, using social media, streaming music and streaming SD video.

Home Standard / Everyday

In addition to everything Home Basic can support, the Home Standard plan (the 50 Mbps plan) can handle having three or four people online at the same time streaming HD video, downloading files, playing online games, and video conferencing. 

This plan pairs download speeds of 50 Mbps with upload speeds of 20 Mbps, and has a typical evening speed of 44 Mbps. Most people think this plan has the best bang for buck, when considering price, max speed and typical evening speed.

Home Fast

The 100 Mbps Home Fast plan lets five or more people do all the things the previous tiers do, with the addition of streaming 4K video and downloading large files. This is a great option if a few people work from home and need to have fast, reliable internet. 

This plan offers download speeds of 100 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps, with a typical evening speed of around 90Mbps. This speed tier is only available to premises with FTTP or HFC connections.

Home Superfast

Home Superfast, with its max download speed of 250 Mbps, can easily handle six or more people online streaming 4K and 8K content, playing complex games, and downloading and uploading large files across multiple devices simultaneously. It’s great for large sharehouses, home-based start-up teams and gluttonous internet users. 

This plan matches download speeds of 250 Mbps with upload speeds of 25 Mbps, and you can expect typical evening speeds of 210 Mbps. This speed is also only available on FTTP and HFC connections.

Home Ultrafast

This is the fastest internet speed currently available in Australia. It offers an even faster online experience with greater capacity for more users and more intensive bandwidth requirements. 

More importantly, it’s a future-proof technology that will be able to handle the increasing connectivity demands of Australian households.

This plan offers download speeds of 1,000 Mbps and upload speeds of 50 Mbps. As with the Fast and Superfast plans, you’ll only be able to get the Ultrafast plan if your property is connected to FTTP or HFC.
